Concept explainers
The giant hornet Vespa mandarinia japonica preys on Japanese bees. However, if one of the hornets attempts to invade a beehive, several hundred of the bees quickly form a compact ball around the hornet to stop it. They don’t sting, bite, crush, or suffocate it. Rather they overheat it by quickly raising their body temperatures from the normal 35°C to 47°C or 48°C, which is lethal to the hornet but not to the bees (Fig. 18-44). Assume the following: 500 bees form a ball of radius R = 2.0 cm for a time t = 20 min, the primary loss of energy by the ball is by thermal

- Carrie is trying to figure out the number of calories in a cube of cheese. To do this, she pours 166.2 mL of water into an aluminum can suspended from a ring stand. She takes the temperature of the water, and finds it to be 19.1 degrees Celsius. Then, she places the 5.23 gram cube of cheese under the can and lights it on fire! While the cheese is burning and for a few minutes after it is done, Carrie records the temperature of the water, finding that it levels out at 45.4 degrees Celsius. How many calories of heat were gained by the water? Please answer to the nearest 0.1 calorie.arrow_forwardOn a warm summer day Mrs. George sliced some strawberries and placed them in a zippered sandwich bag and sealed it with enough air to provide protective air space for the strawberries. She then placed the sealed bag in the refrigerator to keep the strawberries cool. Describe what happens to the bag as it cools in the refrigerator. Why does this happen?arrow_forwardA scuba diver has his lungs filled to half capacity (3 liters) when 10 m below the surface. If the diver holds his breath while quietly rising to the surface, what will the volume of the lungs be (in liters) at the surface? Assume the temperature is the same at all depths. - Long-term space missions require reclamation of the oxygen in the carbon dioxide exhaled by the crew. In one method of reclamation, 1.00 mol of carbon dioxide produces 1.00 mol of oxygen, with 1.00 mol of methane as a by-product. The methane is stored in a tank under pressure and is available to control the attitude of the spacecraft by controlled venting. A single astronaut exhales 1,08 kg of carbon dioxide each day. If the methane generated in the recycling of three astronauts' respiration during one week of flight is stored in an originally empty 165-L tank at -45.0°C, what is the final pressure in the tank? If we ignite the piece of candy bar (literally burn it), and it increases the temperature of 338.09g of water from 16.3°C to 73.87°C, how many calories per gram of energy did the candy bar provide if the final mass of the marshmallow is 2.76? Note: 1.00 cal = 4.184 J.arrow_forwardIn the lungs, a thin respiratory membrane separates tiny sacs of air from the blood in the capillaries at atmospheric pressure. These sacs are called alveoli (spherical shape), and it is from them that oxygen enters the blood. The diameter of the alveoli is 0.25 mm, and the air inside contains 14% oxygen. If the air behaves as an ideal gas at body temperature of 37 °C, find the number of oxygen molecules in one of the sacs?arrow_forward
- Suppose we have a piece of a candy bar that has an initial mass of 28g. If we ignite the piece of candy bar (literally burn it), and it increases the temperature of 393.86g of water from 21.71°C to 78.73°C, how many calories per gram of energy did the candy bar provide if the final mass of the marshmallow is 4.33? Note: 1.00 cal = 4.184 J. Give your answer in units of cal/g.arrow_forwardI have a bucket of icewater with 100 grams of ice and 900 grams of liquid water all at zero degrees Celcius. I throw a hot chunk of iron into it (after which no heat enters or escapes the system), and the final temperature is 100 degrees Celcius with the ice having melted and some of the water actually boiling. The mass of the iron is 473 grams, and its initial temperature is 7,646 degrees Celcius. How many grams of water actually boil? (Don't write the unit, just the number.) You'll need these numbers: Specific heat of water: 4.2 J/g/deg Specific heat of iron: 0.46 J/g/deg Heat of fusion of water: 340 J/g Heat of Vaporization of water: 2300 J/garrow_forwardSuppose a walrus transfers energy by conduction through its blubber at the rate of 125 W when immersed in -1.25°C water. - Total lung capacity of a typical adult is approximately 5.0 L. Approximately 20% of the air is oxygen. At sea level and at an average body temperature of 37°C, how many moles of oxygen do the lungs contain at the end of an inhalation?arrow_forwardDuring a plant visit, it was noticed that a 12-m-long section of a 10-cm-diameter steam pipe is completely exposed to the ambient air. The temperature measurements indicate that the average temperature of the outer surface of the steam pipe is 75°C when the ambient temperature is 5°C. There are also light winds in the area at 10 km/h. The emissivity of the outer surface of the pipe is 0.8, and the average temperature of the surfaces surrounding the pipe, including the sky, is estimated to be 0°C. Determine the amount of heat lost from the steam during a 10-h-long work day. Steam is supplied by a gas-fired steam generator that has an efficiency of 80 percent, and the plant pays $1.05/therm of natural gas. If the pipe is insulated and 90 percent of the heat loss is saved, determine the amount of money this facility will save a year as a result of insulating the steam pipes. Assume the plant operates every day of the year for 10 h. State your assumptions.arrow_forward7. The figure shows a 50 kg lead cylindrical piston which floats on 0.68 mol of compressed air at 30°C.
