In the Wittig reaction, an aldehyde or a ketone reacts with triphenyl phophonium ylide to generate an alkene and triphenylphosphine oxide.

The triphenyl phophonium ylide is termed as Wittig reagent. The Wittig reagent gives good yields of alkene in case of reactants in which other functional groups are present on the aldehydes or ketones. However, as the steric hindrance of the aldehyde or ketone increases, the yield of alkene decreases.
