Chapter 18, Problem 39P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The synthesis of the ketone, (E)-1,6-henicosadien-11-one using (E)-5,10-undecadien-1-ol and 1-decanol as sources of all carbons has to be outlined.

Concept introduction:

Pyridinium chlorochromate is an oxidising agent which is used to stop the oxidation of the alcohols to aldehydes or ketones. Primary alcohols on reaction with pyridinium chlorochromate produce aldehydes, while secondary alcohols give ketones.

Grignard reaction is a reaction in which aryl or alkyl magnesium halides react with carbonyl compounds to produce an alcohol. This reaction occurs through the addition of the alkyl substituent to the carbonyl carbon.
