Chapter 18, Problem 3AWK
Summary Introduction
To review:
The reason as to why there is very little progress against cancer within the year range 1950 to 2011.
Introduction:
Cancer is a notorious disease, which is caused by a variety of factors. The normal genes start dividing abnormally leading to tumor formation. Some common cancer affecting men or women are lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and blood cancer. Comparing to old times, with advances in technology and diagnosis becoming improved, cancer has become treatable. However, the progress has been slow, in fact only 14% (percent) the death rate is seen in the year range 1950 to 2011.

Every year, about a million Americans are diagnosed with cancer. This means that about 75 million Americans now living will eventually have cancer, And one in five will die of the disease. There are many kinds of cancers and many causes, such as smoking, overexposure to ultraviolet rays, a high fat and low fiber diet, and some workplace chemicals. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent each year on searching for treatment, yet less money is spent on prevention. Should we devote more resources to treating cancer or to preventing it? Explain.
New cases of cancer are expected to increase in the ensuing years. How can estimating the future burden of cancer help us to prepare for this? Give detailed examples of different types of cancer and the trends that will likely be observed. What can we realistically expect to achieve regarding cancer risk reduction? Why is it important to have cancer statistics databases?
Should we devote more of our resources treating cancer or preventing it?

Cancer is how the body tries to keep us alive when we are in danger of imminent death from poison; cancer cells feed off our toxic buildup. Only by addressing the cause of the tumor can we have a real cure. The tumor is so important to the body that it is supplied with special blood vessels. Why would the body try to destroy itself? The purpose is to monitor the burden of cancer, evaluate prevention/control, and identify needs for additional efforts/resources on a national, state, and local level. Also noteworthy is the two types of cancer registries, the first being “Hospital” which provides data used to evaluate patient care within the hospital, while “Population-based” registries typically fall under the state health departments and collect data for specific geographic areas.
