Question
Chapter 17.1, Problem 3R
To determine
To Classify:The given elements as alkaline earth metals, alkali metals, transition element or inner transitions element.
Expert Solution & Answer

Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
- Alkali metals are the group-1 elements. These metals show the properties of malleability and ductility. These are the good conductors of electricity. The alkali metals are softer as compared to the other metals.
- Alkaline earth metals are the group-2 elements. These metals form ionic bonds easily with the other element. These are not present in nature in a free state. These elements have two electrons in their outermost shell.
- Transitions metals are those elements that lie between group 1 and group 2 elements. Group 3 elements are the
transition elements . These metals are formed in the purest form in the nature. Also, an important fact is that the transition elements form colors compound. - Lanthanides and Actinides are the inner transition elements. Lanthanides are used to produce the colors on the TV screen while the actinides are used to make high-quality glasses for camera lenses.
- Alkali metals: Sodium, potassium because these are the group first element.
- Alkaline earth metals: magnesium, calcium because these are the group-2 element.
- Transition elements: iron, gold because these are the group-3 element.
- Inner transition elements: plutonium, uranium these are actinides.
