The elements that are malleable, shiny, ductile and good conductors of electricity and heat are called metals. The outermost energy level of the metals consists of one or three electrons.
Metallic bonding can be defined as the positively charged metallic ions which are surrounded by a large number of electrons. It explains most of the properties of the metals. As the electrons present in the outermost energy level are weakly held and hence can travel freely, so the metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.
