Chapter 17, Problem 30E

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The enthalpy of hydration for calcium chloride and calcium iodide needs to be determined.

Concept Introduction : According to Hess’s law, the overall enthalpy is the summation of individual enthalpies:

  ΔH=ΔH1+ΔH2+ΔH3......

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The ion, among Cl- or , I- which is more strongly attracted to water needs to be determined.

Concept Introduction : Hydration energy is the amount of energy evolved when hydration one mole of ions takes place. The heat released due to formation of new bonds with water molecules is termed as the hydration enthalpy. Hydration enthalpy is always negative.

The elements with larger negative value of enthalpy of hydration are easily hydrolyzed than that of the element with lower negative value of enthalpy of hydration.

Magnesium chloride is often used to melt ice on sidewalks. Considering that the solubility of magnesium chloride (95.21 g/mol) in water is 54.3 g per 100.0 g of water, what is the lowest temperature that you would expect to be able to melt ice with magnesium chloride? Assume ideal behavior. (Kf(water)= 1.86°C/m) A. -29.2°C B. -31.8°C C. -25.0°C D. -10.6°C E. -41.0°C
2. Using the data in Appendix A of Benjamin's Water Chemistry, answer the following questions a. What is the Henry's law constant (KH) at 25 °C for the exchange of hydrogen sulfide between the gas and aqueous phases? H₂S (g) H₂S (aq) b. What is the Henry's law constant for the reaction in part a) at a temperature of 5 °C?
