Ultrasound is used in medicine both for diagnostic imaging (Fig. P17.9, page 526) and for therapy. For diagnosis, short pulses of ultrasound are passed through the patient’s body. An echo reflected from a structure of interest is recorded, and the distance to the structure can be determined from the time delay for the echo’s return. To reveal detail, the wavelength of the reflected ultrasound must be small compared to the size of the object reflecting the wave. The speed of ultrasound in human tissue is about 1 500 m/s (nearly the same as the speed of sound in water). (a) What is the wavelength of ultrasound with a frequency of 2.40 MHz? (b) In the whole set of imaging techniques, frequencies in the range 1.00 MHz to 20.0 MHz are used. What is the range of wavelengths corresponding to this range of frequencies?

- The equation of a harmonic wave propagating along a stretched string is represented by y(x, t) = 4.0 sin (1.5x 45t), where x and y are in meters and the time t is in seconds. a. In what direction is the wave propagating? be. N What are the b. amplitude, c. wavelength, d. frequency, and e. propagation speed of the wave?arrow_forwardA siren emits a sound of frequency 1.44103 Hz when it is stationary with respect to an observer. The siren is moving away from a person and toward a cliff at a speed of 15 m/s. Both the cliff and the observer are at rest. Assume the speed of sound in air is 343 m/s. What is the frequency of the sound that the person will hear a. coming directly from the siren and b. reflected from the cliff?arrow_forwardReview. A tuning fork vibrating at 512 Hz falls from rest and accelerates at 9.80 m/s2. How far below the point of release is the tuning fork when waves of frequency 485 Hz reach the release point?arrow_forward
- A sound wave in air has a pressure amplitude equal to 4.00 103 Pa. Calculate the displacement amplitude of the wave at a frequency of 10.0 kHz.arrow_forwardan ultrasonic scan uses the echo waves coming from something moving inside the body and the waves that are directly received from the transmitter to form a measurable beat frequency. this allows the speed of the internal structure to be isolated and analyzed. the speed of the ultrasound waves in tissue is about 1540 m/s. what is the beat frequency detected when wves with a frequency of 4.40 MHz are used to scan a fetal heartbeat (moving at a speed of 9.30 cm/s)f(beat) = |f1 - f2|arrow_forwardBats emit ultrasonic waves with a frequency as high as 1.70 × 105 Hz. What is the wavelength of an ultrasonic wave with frequency 1.70 × 105 Hz in air of temperature 10.9°C? The speed of sound in air at 0°C is v = 331 m/s (see Table 12.1).arrow_forward
- Sound having frequencies above the range of human hearing (about 20, 000 Hz) is called ultrasound. Waves above this frequency can be used to penetrate the body and to produce images by reflecting from surfaces. In a typical ultrasound scan, the waves travel through body tissue with a speed of 1500 m/s. For a good, detailed image, the wavelength should be no more than 1.0 mm. What frequency sound is required for a good scan?arrow_forwardAlthough we can't hear them, the ultrasonic pulses are very loud. In order not to be deafened by the sound they emit, bats can temporarily turn off their hearing. Muscles in the ear cause the bones in their middle ear to separate slightly, so that they don't transmit vibrations to the inner ear. After an ultrasound pulse ends, a bat can hear an echo from an object a minimum of 1 m away. Approximately how much time after a pulse is emitted is the bat ready to hear its echo? A. 0.5 ms B. 1 ms C. 3 ms D. 6 msarrow_forwardA standing wave is the result of superposition of two harmonic waves given by the equations y1(x;t) =Asin(ωt - kx) and y2(x; t) = Asin(ωt + kx). The angular frequency is ω = 3π rad/s and the k = 2πrad/m is the wave number.(a) Give an expression for the amplitude of standing wave. b) calculate the frequency of the wavearrow_forward
- the human ear tends to be most sensitive to sound frequencies of 3 khz. the sound intensity at this frequency is usually measured as 3x10-13 w/m2. how much energy is transported by this type of sound wave to the eardrum (surface area of about 50mm2 ) in 200msarrow_forwardA hospital uses an ultrasonic scanner to locate tumours in a tissue. What is the wavelength of sound in the tissue in which the speed of sound is 1.7 km/s? The operating frequency of the scanner is 4.2 MHz.arrow_forwardThe pan flute is a musical instrument consisting of a number of closed-end tubes of different lengths. When the musician blows over the open ends, each tube plays a different note. The longest pipe is 0.33 m long. What is the frequency of the note it plays?arrow_forward
