Chapter 16.4, Problem 3COMQ
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

RNA interference is the phenomenon in which double stranded RNA causes silencing of mRNA therefore inhibiting the expression of a particular gene. It is widely found in all eukaryotes. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and short-interfering RNA (SiRNAs) are two main sources that promote RNA interference.

RNA interference plays an important role in gene expression, for example, in the embryonic development of plants and animals. miRNA interferes in the function of mRNA; as they are partially complementary to each other, miRNA can bind to mRNA. The SiRNAs do not synthesize in the cell; they enter in the cell from external sources such as by viral infection and interfere with the normal function of mRNA.
