Concept Introduction: The conductors are those materials which can conduct heat or electricity; insulators cannot conduct heat or electricity. The materials having tendency to conduct heat or electricity between conductors and insulators are known as semiconductors. If an impurity is added to a semiconductor, it can create holes by removal of electrons or can add more electrons. If it creates holes, a p-type semiconductor is formed and if electrons are added an n type semiconductor is formed. In both the cases, the conductivity increases as an alternate route can be taken by electrons towards the conduction bands.
