Chapter 15, Problem 39P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Each amino group in epinephrine and albuterol needs to be classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary. Also, the structural formula of both the compound should be compared.

Concept Introduction:An organic compound in which -NH2 is bonded to the carbon atom chain is said to be amine. Based on the attachment to the carbon, the amines are classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary amine.

When -NH2 is attached to a primary carbon atom (carbon atom to which one carbon atom is attached) then such amine is said to be a primary amine.

When -NH is attached to a secondary carbon atom (carbon atom to which two carbon atoms are attached) then such amine is said to be a secondary amine.

When -N is attached to a tertiary carbon atom (carbon atom to which three carbon atoms are attached) then such amine is said to be a tertiary amine.
