Chapter 14.4, Problem 7TY
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The Nernst equation for the reaction P4 +12H+ + 12e  4PH3 has to be written.

Also E for the reaction remains same though the reaction is written with 12P4 or 14P4 has to be shown.

Concept Introduction:

Nernst Equation:

For Half-reaction,

aA + ne- bB

The Nernst equation for the half-cell potential E is given as:

E = E° - RTnF ln ABbAAa

Where,

= standard reduction potential ( AA=AB=1 )

R = gas constant (8.314J/(K.mol))=8.314((V.C)/(K.mol))

T = Temperature (in K)

n = number of electrons in half-reaction

F = Faraday constant ( 9.649×104C/mol )

A = Activity of species, i

At 25°C , by converting the Nernst equation to natural logarithm and by substituting the gas constant and temperature, we get the Nernst equation as:

E = E°0.05916 VnlogABbAAa

The potential of half-cell does not change though multiplying half-reaction by a number.
