Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Three types of crystalline solids have to be described. Example of these three types of crystalline solids have to be given.
Concept Introduction:
Generally solids are two types-
- Crystalline solids
- Amorphous solids
Crystalline solids are solid compounds with highly ordered structure of the constituents (atoms, molecules or ions). The example of crystalline solids are diamond, quartz, etc.
Amorphous solids are the solid not having definite size and shape. Amorphous solids are not arranged in regular or ordered form.

Answer to Problem 34A
Crystalline solids are solid compounds with highly ordered structure of the constituents (atoms, molecules or ions). Depending on the constituents (atoms, molecules or ions), the crystalline solids are classified in three types-
- Ionic solids
- Molecular solids
- Atomic solids
Sodium chloride salt is an example of ionic solid.
Ice is an example of molecular solid.
Diamond is an example of atomic solid.
Explanation of Solution
Crystalline solids are solid compounds with highly ordered structure of the constituents (atoms, molecules or ions). Depending on the constituents (atoms, molecules or ions), the crystalline solids are classified in three types-
- Ionic solids
- Molecular solids
- Atomic solids
Ionic solids: The constituents in ionic solids are the ions. The ions in a compound are arranged in an ordered structure to form an ionic solid. Sodium chloride salt is an example of ionic solid.
Molecular solids: The molecules in a compound are arranged in an ordered structure by van der Waals forces to form molecular solids. Ice is an example of molecular solid.
Atomic solids: The atoms in a compound are arranged in an ordered structure connected by covalent bonds to form atomic solids. Diamond is an example of atomic solid.
