Skill Building Small, but Important Differences

The size or number of rings is not the only difference between the nitrogen-containing bases. Let’s examine each of the four bases more closely.

  1. a. Draw Lewis structures for each of the four bases. Be sure to show the lone pairs of electrons on the nitrogen and oxygen atoms.
  2. b. Identify the H atoms that could form hydrogen bonds with water or other nucleic acids.
  3. c. Now identify the other (non-hydrogen) atoms that could participate in hydrogen bonding.

Hint: Revisit Section 8.3 for information on hydrogen bonds.
