Chapter 13, Problem 34P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The structures of the acetylation products of o-, m-, and p-xylene are to be written.

Concept introduction:

In Friedel-Crafts acylation, acyl halides react with aromatic compounds in the presence of a Lewis acid as a catalyst for the addition of acetyl group to the aromatic ring.

In Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction, the addition of electrophile into the aromatic pi system of the ring takes place via electrophilic aromatic substitution.

All the activating substituents have ortho, para directing effect and deactivating substituents have meta directing effect on the substituted benzene ring.

Grignard reagent is a versatile tool in synthetic organic chemistry. Using bromocyclopentane as a starting material, show how a Grignard reagent, X, is synthesized. Reaction of X with water produces compound Y while treatment in carbon dioxide followed by hydrolysis forms compound Z. 3-methyl-2butanone reacts with X and hydrolyses to yield compound AA. Draw the structural formulae of compounds Y, Z and AA and write the chemical equations respectively.
a) Cycohexanone reacts with 1,3-propanediol under acid catalysis to form the cyclic acetal. Write down the reaction mechanism and explain why the use of cyclic acetals as protecting groups is preferred over open- chain acetals. b) Eugenol (see below) is made from cloves. Give the structural formulas of the products which are formed after reaction of eugenol with i) BH3, then H2O2 / NaOH or after reaction with ii) acetic anhydride. OH Eugenol
Give structures for the product(s) formed from the other alkenes when subjected to the conditions of ozonolysis.
