A Visit to Santa. You decide to visit Santa Claus at the north pole to put in a good word about your splendid behavior throughout the year. While there, you notice that the elf Sneezy, when hanging from a rope, produces a tension of 395.0 N in the rope. If Sneezy hangs from a similar rope while delivering presents at the earth’s equator, what will the tension in it be? (Recall that the earth is rotating about an axis through its north and south poles.) Consult Appendix F and start with a free-body diagram of Sneezy at the equator.

- A box of mass 3.0 kgkg slides down a rough vertical wall. The gravitational force on the box is 29.4 NN . When the box reaches a speed of 2.5 m/sm/s , you start pushing on one edge of the box at a 45∘∘ angle (use degrees in your calculations throughout this problem) with a constant force of magnitude FpFp = 23.0 NN , as shown in (Figure 1). There is now a frictional force between the box and the wall of magnitude 13.0 NN . How fast is the box sliding 2.8 ss after you started pushing on it? - A person pushing a uniformly-loaded 31.7 kg wheelbarrow of length L with pushing force P is attempting to get it over a step. The maximum horizontal force that the person can apply is P, = 233 N. What is the maximum height h of the step, expressed as a fraction n of the wheel's radius R. that the person can get the wheelbarrow over? We will do this by finding the gravitational field g due to the Moon or the Sun, which is the acceleration that the Earth would have if it were interacting with each of them. For reference, the Moon has a mass of 7.34 × 1022 kilograms and is located 3.84 × 105 kilometers away from the Earth. The Sun, meanwhile, has a mass of 1.99 × 1030 kilograms and is located 1.49 × 108 kilometers away from the Earth. - A speedboat with a mass of 505 kg (including the driver) is tethered to a fixed buoy by a strong 29.7 m cable. The boat's owner loves high speed, but does not really want to go anywhere. So the owner revs up the boat's engine, makes a lot of noise, and runs the boat in circles around the buoy with the cable supplying all the necessary centripetal force. When the tension of the cable is steady at 12300 N, with what force is the boat's engine pushing the boat? Different physics textbooks treat drag force somewhat differently and use different formulas. For the present purpose, take the water's drag force on the boat to be (450 kg/m) × v², where v denotes the boat's speed. Ignore any drag force on the cable. force: N & TOOLS x10arrow_forwardQuestion 13: A block of mass M is released at rest and it is under going a circular motion in a path of radius R as shown in Figure 7. This means that if they move to the equator, they will actually weigh a little bit less standing on a scale then when they were at the North Pole.
