You are headwaiter at a new restaurant, and your boss asks you to hang a sign for her. You’re to hang the sign, whose mass is 66 kg, in the configuration shown in Fig. 12.24. A uniform horizontal rod of mass 8.2 kg and length 2.3 m holds the sign. At one end the rod is attached to the wall by a pivot: at the other end it’s supported by a cable that can withstand a maximum tension of 800 N. You’re to determine the minimum height h above the pivot for anchoring the cable to the wall.

- A wooden door 2.1 m high and 0.90 m wide is hung by two hinges 1.8 m apart. The lower hinge is 15 cm above the bottom of the door. The center of mass of the door is at its geometric center, and the weight of the door is 260 N, which is supported equally by both hinges. Find the horizontal force exerted by each hinge on the door.arrow_forwardOne end of a uniform rod of weight w = 73.5 N and length L = 2.55 m is supported by a cable at an angle of ? = 37.0°above the rod. The other end rests on a small frictionless support and presses into a wall as shown in the figure. Determine the magnitude n of the vertical normal force exerted by the support on the rod and find the magnitude T of the tension in the cable.arrow_forwardChapter 12, Problem 065 In the figure, a uniform beam with a weight of 55.7 N and a length of 3.31 m is hinged at its lower end, and a horizontal force F of magnitude 46.7 N acts at its upper end. - A 387-kg steel beam of length 5.00 m is attached to a wall by a hinge, and kept level by a cable attached to it at a 30.0◦ angle. The maximum tension that the cable can sustain before breaking is 13.0 kN. There is a support that allows a mass to be hung from the beam, three-quarters of the way along its length. (a) What is the maximum mass that can be hung from the beam before the cable snaps? (b) At this maximum mass, what is the magnitude and direction of the reaction force F from the wall against the hinge?arrow_forwardA tightrope walker stands on a wire that is supported by a pole at each end. The tightrope walker creates a tension of 3.42 ✕ 103 N in a wire making an angle 6.2° below the horizontal with each supporting pole. Calculate how much this tension stretches the steel wire (in cm) if it was originally 16 m long and 0.50 cm in diameter. There is no accompanying image. This is the complete question.arrow_forwardConsider a rigid steel beam of length L = 14 m and mass mb = 405 kg resting on two supports, one at each end. A worker of mass mw = 68 kg sits on the beam at a distance x from support A. Refer to the figure, though note that it is not drawn to scale. a. When the worker sits at a distance x = 7.5 m from support A, calculate the force, in newtons, that support B must exert on the beam in order for it to remain at rest. Use g with three significant figures. b. The force exerted on the beam by support A is measured and found to be FA = 2240 N. - You open a restaurant and hope to entice customers by hang- ing out a sign (Fig. 11.37). The uniform horizontal beam support- ing the sign is 1.50 m long, has a mass of 18.0 kg, and is hinged to the wall. The sign itself is uniform with a mass of 28.0 kg and over- all length of 1.20 m. The two wires supporting the sign are each 32.0 cm long, are 90.0 cm apart, and are equally spaced from the middle of the sign. The cable supporting the beam is 2.00 m long.
