The boom in the crane of Fig. 12.21 is free to pivot about point P and is supported by the cable attached halfway along its 18-m length. The cable passes over a pulley and is anchored at the back of the crane. The boom has mass 1700 kg distributed uniformly along its length, and the mass hanging from the boom is 2200 kg. The boom makes a 50° angle with the horizontal. Find the tension in the cable.

- A 1220N uniform boom is supported by a cable perpendicular to the boom, as seen in the figure below. The boom is hinged at the bottom, and an m=2120N weight hangs from its top. Assume the angles to be a=60.7deg and 0=(90.0°- a). Ꮎ Ө ja m Find the tension in the supporting cable. The right end of the beam is supported by a vertical column. Find the tension in the rope.arrow_forwardProblem 5: A 400.0-N sign hangs from the end of a uniform strut. The strut is 4.0 m long and weighs 600.0 N. The strut is supported by a hinge at the wall and by a cable whose other end is tied to the wall at a point 3.0 m above the left end of the strut. Find the tension in the supporting cable and the force of the hinge on the strut.arrow_forward
- In a city park a nonuniform wooden beam 4.00 m long is suspended horizontally by a light steel cable at each end. The cable at the left-hand end makes an angle of 30.0° with the vertical and has tension 620 N. The cable at the right-hand end of the beam makes an angle of 50.0° with the vertical. As an employee of the Parks and Recreation Department, you are asked to find the weight of the beam and the location of its center of gravity.arrow_forwardThe system shown is in equilibrium. A mass of 122 kg hangs from the end of a strut, which is connected by a hinge to the ground and makes an angle of θ = 50.0 degrees with the ground. The strut has a mass of 48.4 kg and is uniform. a) Find the tension in the cable holding up the strut, which makes an angle of ϕ = 30.0 degrees with the ground and attaches at a point 1/3 L from the top of the strut. b) Find the horizontal and vertical forces exerted on the strut by the hinge.arrow_forwardA tightrope walker stands on a wire that is supported by a pole at each end. The tightrope walker creates a tension of 3.42 ✕ 103 N in a wire making an angle 6.2° below the horizontal with each supporting pole. Calculate how much this tension stretches the steel wire (in cm) if it was originally 16 m long and 0.50 cm in diameter. I asked this question THREE times and it was rejected the first two for being incomplete. It is not incomplete. There is no accompanying image. The third time, it was answered . . . incorrectly. I am very annoyed that I keep wasting my limited question attempts on ONE question that I am trying to understand how to do.arrow_forward

A cable is connected 3.5 m from the hinge where the bridge pivots (measured along the bridge) and pulls horizontally on the bridge to hold it in place. What is the tension in the cable? Find the magnitude and direction of the force the hinge exerts on the bridge. If the cable suddenly breaks, what is the magnitude of the angular acceleration of the drawbridge just after the cable breaks? What is the angular speed of the drawbridge as it becomes horizontal? What is the velocity of the drawbridge, just before it “hits” (i.e. goes horizontal)?arrow_forward12.3arrow_forward
- A uniform drawbridge must be held at a 36.5 angle above the horizontal to allow ships to pass underneath. The drawbridge weighs 45000 N, is 14.0 m long, and pivots about a hinge at its lower end. A cable is connected 4.00 m from the hinge, as measured along the bridge, and pulls horizontally on the bridge to hold it in place. A) What is the tension in the cable?
