Concept explainers
A mix-up in a hospital ward caused a mother with O and MN blood types to think that a baby given to her really belonged to someone else. Tests in the hospital showed that the doubting mother was able to taste PTC (see problem 9). The baby given to her had O and MN blood types and had no reaction when the bitter PTC chemical was placed on its tongue. The mother had four other children with the following blood types and tasting abilities for PTC:
1. type A and MN blood, taster
2. type B and N blood, nontaster
3. type A and M blood, taster
4. type A and N blood, taster
Without knowing the father’s blood types and tasting ability, can you determine whether the child is really hers? (Assume that all her children have the same father.)

What is the best explanation for the Smith’s son whose blood was labeled AB-?arrow_forwardMrs. Kaur and Mrs. Sharma had babies on the same day at the same hospital. Mrs. Kaur took home a girl (Harleen) and Mrs. Sharma received a boy (Baldeep). However, Mrs. Sharma was sure she had given birth to a girl and brought a suit against the hospital. Blood tests showed that Mr. Sharma was type O. Mrs. Sharma was type AB and Mr. & Mrs. Kaur were both type B. Harleen was type O and Baldeep was type A. Had a mistake occurred? Did the parents bring home the incorrect babies? a. What is Harleen's determined genotype? b. What is Baldeep's determined genotype? c. What is Mr. Kaur's determined genotype? d. - Hemophilia is an X-linked disease associated with the inability to produce specific proteins in the blood-clotting pathway. Shown above is a family pedigree tree in which family members afflicted with the disease are shown with filled-in squares (male) or circles (females). A couple is trying to determine the likelihood of passing on the disease to their future children (represented by the ? symbol above) because the hemophilia runs in the woman’s family 4.Assuming that the woman in the couple is a carrier, what is the probability that the couple’s first son will have hemophilia?arrow_forwardWhat would the offspring's blood type be if the mother is type O+ (she is homozygous for Rh factor) and the father is A- (he is homozygous for type A)? Hint: You have to do two Punnett squares. The two Punnett squares must be shown to get the full points. After doing the Punnett squares, write down the possibilities of the offspring’s blood type.arrow_forwardPlease answer this question.arrow_forward

B) A couple has one child with type AB blood. If one parent is heterozygous for blood type A and the other parent is homozygous for their blood type, what are the chances of their future children having: Type A blood? Type B blood? Type AB blood? O blood?arrow_forwardIn the 1950s, A young woman sued film star/director Charlie Chaplin for parental support for her illegitimate child. Charlie Chaplin‘s blood type was already on record as type AB. The mother of the child had type B and her son had type O blood.
