Chapter 12, Problem 12TYK
Summary Introduction
To review:
The number of genes that control pod color. The letter designation for genes and finding the dominant allele.
Introduction:
When homozygous parents with dominant and recessive traits are crossed, they produce F1 progeny in the ratio 3:1, which means that out of four offspring, 3 are dominant and 1 is recessive. The dominant genes are denoted by capital letters and recessive genes are denoted by small letters.

A homozygous variety of opium poppy (Papaver somniferum Laciniatum) with lacerate leaves was crossed with another
homozygous variety with normal leaves. All the F₁ had lacerate leaves (jagged-edged leaves). Two F₁ plants were crossed to
produce the F2. Of the F2, 249 had lacerate leaves and 16 had normal leaves.
How are lacerate leaves determined in the opium poppy?
two genes, with a dominant allele at both loci
two genes, where one allele at a single locus is recessive lethal
one gene, with codominant alleles at a single locus
two genes, with a dominant allele at either or both loci
Give genotypes for all the plants in the P, F₁, and F2 generations. Some generations will have more than one genotype.

Two pure-breeding lines of petunia plants are crossed. Line 1 plants grow to a height of 54
cm, and Line 2 plants grow to a height of 18 cm. Petunia plant height is controlled by three
genes, A, B and C. Line 1 has the genotype A₁A₁B₁B₁C₁C₁, and line 2 has the genotype
A2A2B₂B₂C₂C₂. Assume that genotype alone determines plant height under ideal growth
conditions and that the alleles of the three genes are additive.
If the F1 plants are self crossed, what is the expected proportion of F2 plants with the
genotype A₁A₁B₁B₁C₁C₁

A variety of opium poppy with lacerate leaves was crossed with a variety that has normal leaves. All the F1 plants had lacerate leaves. Two F1 plants were then interbred to produce the F2. Of the F2 plants, 249 had lacerate leaves and 16 had normal leaves. What are the genotypes of the plants in the P (parental), F1, and F2 generations? How are lacerate leaves determined in the opium poppy? Note: You can use the symbols A and B to represent the two genes involved. (How do we know there are two?)

- Two true-breeding varieties of maize, one 11 cm high and the other 47 cm high were crossed and the resultant F1 hybrids were then crossed to generate the F2 . In the F2 there were a total of 13,923 plants with a continuous variation in heights between the two extremes and with only 3 plants as large as 47 cm high and 5 plants of 11 cm high. How many genes and how many alleles are involved in determining height in this plant?arrow_forwardYou have two true-breeding strains of coneflower. One strain has purple flowers and purple stems. The other strain has white flowers and green stems. When you cross these strains the F1 generation has purple flowers and purple stems. From this information you know that purple flowers is dominant to white flowers and that purple stems is dominant to green stems. In terms of genetic mechanisms, there could be two explanations: (1) flower color and stem color are each controlled by separate, independently segregating genes, and (2) there is one gene controlling both flower color and stem color. A. If explanation #1 is correct what would you see if the F1 generation were self-crossed to produce an F2 generation. Make up appropriate genetic symbols for this model and work out the cross to the F2 generation. B. Two F1 plants were interbred to produce the F2. Of the F2, 249 had lacerate leaves and 16 had normal leaves. Give genotypes for all the plants in the P, F1, and F2 generations. Explain how lacerate leaves are determined in the opium poppy.arrow_forwardYou are studying three linked genes in snapdragons. The flower color locus is in the center. There are 8.3 cM between the flower color locus and the plant height locus. There are 12.4 cM between the flower color locus and the leaf type locus. The coefficient of coincidence is 0.8. Pure-breeding tall, red-flowered plants with fuzzy leaves were crossed to pure-breeding dwarf, blue-flowered plants with smooth leaves. The F1 were testcrossed. Calculate the proportion of the testcross progeny that are expected to have red flowers and fuzzy leaves. Round properly to 4 decimal digits. Answer:arrow_forwardTwo true breeding plants are cross pollinated. One plant is homozygous dominant for heightand color while the other is homozygous recessive for height and color. (A:tall, a:short, B:brown,b:red) The F1 plants are allowed to self-fertilize to produce an F2 generation. In 94 of the crosses, all the F1 offspring were black and an F2 ratio of 3 black:1 white was obtained. In the other 6 cases, half of the F1 animals were black and the other half were white. Why? - One strain of periwinkleplants has green leaves and another strain has white leaves. Bothstrains are true-breeding. You do not know if the phenotypicdifference is due to alleles of a nuclear gene or an organellar gene. The two strains were analyzed using reciprocal crosses, and thefollowing results were obtained:A plant with green leaves is pollinated by a plant with whiteleaves: all offspring have green leaves.A plant with white leaves is pollinated by a plant with greenleaves: all offspring have white leaves. Is this pattern of inheritance consistent with simple Mendelianinheritance, where green is dominant to white, and/or is it consistentwith maternal inheritance?arrow_forwardSuppose that the wild type phenotype for tomatoes is red, round fruit with three-parted leaves and that a strain of mutant tomatoes has yellow, pear-shaped fruit with entire leaves. The resulting Punnett square is shown. One cell has been completed with the correct tomato phenotype. Fill in the rest of the Punnett square by placing a fruit and leaf phenotype in each cell.
