Removing nitrogen from toxic wastewater. Highly toxic wastewater is produced during the manufacturing of dry-spun acrylic fiber One way to lessen toxicity is to remove the nitrogen from the wastewater. A group of environmental engineers investigated a promising method—called anaerobic ammonium oxidation—for -nitrogen removal and reported the results in the Chemical Engineering Journal (April 2013). A sample of 120 specimens of toxic wastewater was collected and each specimen was treated with the nitrogen removal method. The amount of nitrogen removed (measured in milligrams per liter) was determined, as well as the amount of ammonium (milligrams per liter) used in the removal process. These data (simulated from information provided in the journal article) are saved in the file The data for the first 5 specimens are shown below. Consider a simple linear
- a. Assess statistically, the adequacy of the fit of the linear model, Do you recommend using the model for predicting nitrogen amount?
- a. b Find a 95% prediction interval for nitrogen amount when amount of ammonium used is 100 milligrams per liter Practically interpret the result (41.9. 77 9)
- b. Will a 95% confidence interval for the
mean nitrogen amount when amount of ammonium used is 100 milligrams per liter be wider or narrower than the interval, part b? Verify your answer by finding the 95% confidence interval for the mean. Narrower - c. Will a 90% confidence interval for the mean nitrogen amount when amount of ammonium used is 100 milligrams per liter be wider or narrower than the interval, part c? Verify your answer by finding the 90% confidence interval for the mean. Narrower (first 5 observations of 120 shown)

- The DENR has a new procedure to detect algal bloom in water being tested. This new procedure is important because, it could be used to detect three different contaminants-organic pollutants, volatile solvents, and chlorinated compounds. The department claims that it can detect high levels of organic pollutants with 99.95% accuracy, volatile solvents with 89.70% accuracy, and chlorinated compounds with 99.70% accuracy. If an algal bloom is not present, the test does not signal. Samples are prepared for the calibration of the test and 60% of them are contaminated with organic pollutants, 27% with volatile solvents, and 13% with traces of chlorinated compounds. A test sample is selected randomly. Denote as follows: S = signal, O = organic pollutants, V = volatile solvents, C = chlorinated compounds. If the test signals, what is the probability that chlorinated compounds are present? (Show complete solution in your answer sheet) O a. P(CIS) = 0.1386 Ob.P(C|S) = 0.1184 OC. A health organization recommends drinking water should contain no more than 10 parts per billion (ppb) of arsenic. A company produces filters to clean arsenic from private wells that could be affected by the groundwater. The company wants to investigate the effectiveness of a new filter compared to that of an older filter. They will test the filters on a field that is bordered on one side by a granite ledge and on the other side by a burned forest. The field is divided into 88 square plots of equal size, and a well to collect groundwater is drilled in the center of each plot. One filter will be used in each well. The following diagram shows the placement of the wells in the field. The company will use four of each type of filter to conduct the investigation. A randomized block design will be used. (a) Assuming there is a difference in the effectiveness of the two…arrow_forwardOne effect of the pesticide DDT upon birds is to inhibit the production of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which controls calcium metabolism. It is believed that this causes eggshells to be thinner and weaker than normal and makes the eggs more prone to breakage. An experiment was conducted where 16 sparrow hawks were fed a mixture of 3 ppm dieldrin and 15 ppm DDT (a combination often found in contaminated prey). The first egg laid by each bird was measured, and the mean shell thickness was found to be 0.19 mm. A “normal” eggshell has a mean thickness of 0.2 mm. - In an experimental study, it was noticed that people who eat more leafy, green vegetables tend to get better sleep than the general population. Researchers wonder whether the improved sleep might be caused by the minerals potassium and magnesium found in leafy, green vegetables. How could the researchers design an experiment to determine the effects of potassium and magnesium on sleep?arrow_forwardCarbon dioxide is known to have a critical effect on microbiological growth. Small amounts of CO2 stimulate growth of some organisms, whereas high concentrations inhibit the growth of most. The latter effect is used commercially when perishable food products are stored. A study is conducted to investigate the effect of CO2 on the growth rate of pseudomonas fragi, a food-spoiling organism. Carbon dioxide is administered at five predetermined different atmospheric pressures. The response measured was the percentage change in cell mass after 1-hour growing time. Ten cultures were used at each atmospheric pressure level, resulting in the following data: 0.0 .083 .29 .50 .86 62.6 50.9 45.5 29.5 24.9 59.6 44.3 41.1 22.8 17.2 64.5 47.5 29.8 19.2 7.8 59.3 49.5 38.3 20.6 10.5 58.6 48.5 40.2 29.2 17.8 64.6 50.4 38.5 24.1 22.1 50.9 35.2 30.2 22.6 22.6 56.2 49.9 27.0 32.7 16.8 52.3…arrow_forwardA public health researcher is investigating the effectiveness of fluoride in preventing cavities. Two communities are studied, one with a fluoridiated water supply and the second with non-fluoridated water. A random sample of n1 = found that Y1 400 and n2 = = 348 residents in the first community and y2 900 residents are obtained from these two communities, respectively. It was 819 residents in the second community had cavities. Consider modeling these counts by two binomial distributions with the probability of success (presence of cavities) as 71 and 72 for communities with fluoridated and non-fluoridated water supplies, respectively. (i.e. consider the random variables Y Bin(n1, T1) and Y2 ~ Bin(n2, T2).) a. Let P = Y1/n1 and P2 with cavities in each population. Approximate the sampling distributions of P1 and P2. b. Based on your answer from (a), approximate the sampling distribution for the difference in sample proportions, D = P1 – P2. (Hint: think of this as a sum of normal…arrow_forward
- Pineal Gland Study. Dr. Marquez hypothesized that fluoride had a deleterious effect on the pineal gland, which helps with sleeping. He measured the amount of fluoride in Americans and compared it to the fluoride level in Europeans, where its use in drinking water has been banned. He knew from reading the literature that the average fluoride level in Europeans was 40 parts per million (ppm). He collected a representative sample of 625 Americans and found that their fluoride level was 60 ppm with a standard deviation of 250 ppm. Chlorophylls were extracted from chopped up grass and measured by spectrophotometry. The table shows results for chlorophyll a for four separate analysis of five blades of grass. Differences between mean values for each of the five blades of grass are a measure of variation due to sampling (ssampling). Using Excel and it’s ANOVA function, find the standard deviations attributable to sampling and to analysis, as well as the overall standard deviation arising from both sources.arrow_forwardShow the output of microsoft Excel.
