Chapter 11, Problem 11.112ACI

Doctors and ethics. Refer to the Journal of Medical Ethics (Vol. 32, 2006) study of physicians’ use of ethics consultation, Exercise 2.166 (p. 120). Recall that the medical researchers measured the length of lime in practice (i.e .. years of experience) and the amount of exposure to ethics in medical school (number of hours) for a sample of 118 physicians. Consider a straight-line regression model relating hours of exposure (y) to time in practice (x).

  1. a. Fit the model to the data saved in the file and conduct a test (at α = .05 ) for a linear relationship between the two variables.
  2. b. In Exercise 2.166 you identified a highly suspect outlier for hours of exposure. Remove this outlier from the data set and rerun the analysis. part a. What do you observe?

A researcher interested in explaining the level of foreign reserves for the country of Barbados estimated the following multiple regression model using yearly data spanning the period 2001 to 2016:  ??=?+????+????+????   Where FR = yearly foreign reserves ($000’s), OIL = annual oil prices, EXP = yearly total exports ($000’s) and FDI = annual foreign direct investment ($000’s). Absenteeism:  Absenteeism can be a serious employment problem.  It is estimated that absenteeism reduces potential output by more than 10%.  Two economists launched a research project to learn more about the problem.  They randomly selected 100 organizations to participate in a 1-year study.  For each organization, they recorded the average number of days absent per employee and several variables thought to affect absenteeism.  Question: Use the t-tests and the slope coefficient for U/M Rel to describe how the relationship between the union and the management affects absenteeism.
