The reason as to why it is important to obtain both infrared absorption and Raman spectra in the characterization of benzene has to be stated.

Concept introduction:

Spectroscopy method is used to identify the structure of the substance.  It is based on the interactions between matter and electromagnetic radiations.  The complex vibrations exhibited by the polyatomic molecule are known as normal modes of vibrations.  The vibrational modes of a molecule are IR or Raman active.  The total number of vibrational degrees of freedom for the nonlinear molecule is represented by 3N−6.
