Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The shape of the nitronium ion, ${\text{NO}}_{\text{2}}^{\text{+}}$, has to be predicted.  Whether the data about the active modes is consistent with the predicted shape is to be stated.  The vibrational wavenumbers have to be assigned to the modes from which they arise.

Concept introduction:

Spectroscopy method is used to identify the structure of the substance.  It is based on the interactions between matter and electromagnetic radiations.  The complex vibrations exhibited by the polyatomic molecule are known as normal modes of vibrations.  The vibrational modes of a molecule are IR or Raman active.  The total number of vibrational degrees of freedom for the linear molecule is represented by $3N-5$.
