Although tea is the world’s most widely consumed beverage after water, little is known about its nutritional value. Folacin is the only B vitamin present in any significant amount in tea, and recent advances in assay methods have made accurate determination of folacin content feasible. Consider the accompanying data on folacin content for randomly selected specimens of the four leading brands of green tea. folacin content for randomly selected specimens of the four leading brands of green tea.
1: | 7.9 | 6.2 | 6.6 | 8.6 | 8.9 | 10.1 9.6 |
2: | 5.7 | 7.5 | 9.8 | 6.1 | 8.4 | |
3: | 6.8 | 7.5 | 5.0 | 7.4 | 5.3 | 6.1 |
4: | 6.4 | 7.1 | 7.9 | 4.5 | 5.0 | 4.0 |
(Data is based on "Folacin Content of Tea,” J. of the Amer. Dietetic Assoc., 1983: 627-632.) Does this data suggest that true average folacin content is the same for all brands?
a. Carry out a test using α = .05.
b. Assess the plausibility of any assumptions required for your analysis in part (a).
c. Perform a multiple comparisons analysis to identify significant differences among brands.

- An experiment was conducted to compare the alcohol content of soy sauce on two different production lines. Production was monitored eight times a day. The data are shown here. Production line 1 0.38 0.37 0.39 0.41 0.38 0.39 0.40 0.39 Production line 2 0.48 0.39 0.42 0.52 0.40 0.48 0.52 0.52 Assume both populations are normal. It is suspected that production line 1 is not producing as consistently as production line 2 in terms of alcohol content. Using the 0.05 level of significance, can conclude that the population standard deviations for the alcohol content of these two types of production lines could be the same.arrow_forwardAn experiment was conducted to compare the alcohol content of soy sauce on two different production lines. Perform a hypothesis test to compare the population standard deviation of these two types of production lines. What is the value of the test statistic?arrow_forwardA researcher is interested in determining whether course delivery mode (online v on-ground) has had an effect on students' final exam scores. Below are the scores for each group. Conduct a two-samples t-test to determine if there is a significant difference between average scores in both groups. Assume alpha =0.05 Copy/paste the data below into an Excel Sheet (or Google Sheets) and run a two-samples t-test. Copy/paste the results into the response window below. Be sure to include your interpretation of the results. In your answer, state the null and the research hypotheses and explain whether the results of the two-sample test led you to reject or fail…arrow_forward
- A group of neuroscientists conducted a study to determine if the neurotransmitter acetylcholine may be important for reference memory. A group of rats was selectively bred to exhibit high levels of acetylcholine while another group was bred for low levels of acetylcholine in the brain. Then the two groups of rats performance on a reference memory test was compared. Identify the appropriate test. Select one: a. single samples t test b. z test c. paired samples t test. X d. independent samples t testarrow_forwardIn order to determine if the average bacteria content of southern flowing streams is significantly different from the average bacteria content of northern flowing streams, independent random samples of 35 southern flowing streams and 33 northern flowing streams were taken. Given the testing statistics below, determine if the data provides sufficient evidence to conclude that the average bacteria content of southern flowing streams is significantly different from the average bacteria content of northern flowing streams, at the 4% significance level. H0:μs=μnHa:μs≠μn t0=2.084 t0.02=±1.778 Select the correct answer below: Yes; the test statistic is between the critical values. No; the test statistic is not between the critical values. Yes; the test statistic is not between the critical values. No; the test statistic is between the critical values.arrow_forwardWhat is the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis for the given problem?arrow_forward

The results of the survey are shown below. Is there evidence to conclude that there is a difference in what Democrats and Republicans think is the most important? Economy Foreign Affairs Family Values Environment Other Democrats 82 58 80 70 44 Republicans 106 78 94 57 38 What can be concluded at the αα = 0.05 significance level? - To determine whether a new sleeping pill has an affect that varies with dosage, a researcher randomly assigns adult insomniacs, in equal numbers, to receive either 4 or 8 grams of the sleeping pill. The amount of sleeping time is measured for each subject during an 8-hour period after the administration of the dosage. What type of design is this, and what type of statistic is needed to analyze the data (consider ABAB studies)?arrow_forwardAccording to the February 2008 Federal Trade Commission report on consumer fraud and identity theft, 23% of all complaints in 2007 were for identity theft. In that year, Alaska had 321 complaints of identity theft out of 1,432 consumer complaints ("Consumer fraud and," 2008). Does this data provide enough evidence to show that Alaska had a lower proportion of identity theft than 23%? Test at the 5% level. viii) Comparing p-value and α value, which is the correct decision to make for this hypothesis test? A. Reject H B. Fail to reject Ho C. Accept Ho D. Accept HA Enter letter corresponding to correct answer. (ix) Select the statement that most correctly interprets the result of this test: A. The result is statistically significant at .05 level of significance. Evidence supports the claim that the proportion of complaints due to identity theft in Alaska is less than 23%. B. The result is statistically significant at .05 level of significance. They conducted a prospective cohort study following obese and non-obese individuals who were free of CVD at the beginning of study for five years. The investigators were also interested in assessing age as a potential confounder, effect modifier, or both. Use the data below to answer the accompanying questions.
