The role of histone H1 in the structure of the eukaryotic chromosome.

Introduction:

The proteins which help in condensing the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) into chromatin in the nucleus are called histone proteins. These proteins are basic (or alkaline) in nature and are positively charged as they are mostly made up of lysine and arginine. Their positive nature strongly attracts the negatively charged DNA. This ionic interaction helps in the tight packaging of DNA around the histone proteins. The histone proteins play a major role in gene regulation. The histone proteins are of 5 types, namely H1, H2A, H2B, H3, and H4.
