Summary Introduction

To review:

The experimental design to evaluate the role of flavanoids present in chocolate, in inhibiting the cell cycle of breast cancer cells growing in culture.

Introduction:

The 8000 different compounds of polyphenols are divided into 10 different general classes. Flavanoids comes under this family and consists more than 4000 varieties. These compounds are one of the common components in the human diet. They are generally present as O-glycosides with sugars bound at C3 position. The cocoa solids produced from the cacao tree beans, are the rich source of flavanoids. Flavanoids are a large group of antioxidants present in the plants. Flavanols are the specific type of flavanoids found in the chocolate. Dark chocolate cosists 45 to 80 % of cocoa solids, and milk chocolate contain 5 to 7 %, thus dark chocolate is considered as a rich source of flavanoids. They exhibit specific properties beneficial for human health because they interact with many of the cellular targets, and acts as anti-oxidant and free-radical scavenger. Flavanoids also bear anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and especially anti-cancer properties.

New treatments for several conditions are being developed using stem cells in medical waste, such as biopsy material, teeth, menstrual blood, umbilical cords, and fatty tissue removed in liposuction. For example, fat samples from injured horses are used to grow stem cells to treat tendon injuries. Explain how the two defining characteristics of stem cells enable them to be used to replace damaged or diseased tissue, so that the new tissue functions as opposed to forming a scar.
How did you know that Paclitaxel was inhibiting cell division? What method of observation was used and how did you interpret the images to come to your conclusion that Paclitaxel was inhibiting cell division?
A scientist adds colchicine, a microtubule polymerization inhibitor, to a cell entering mitosis. At metaphase, the chromosomes of the cell were arranged as shown below. Explain why this arrangement is consistent with the application of colchicine. Predict how colchicine would affect the cell as it attempts mitosis. of
