Interpretation: The factors affecting the mean free path are to be explained.
Concept introduction:
The distance traveled by a gas molecule from one successful collision to the next is called the mean free path. It depends on various factors, like density, pressure, temperature, volume, etc., based on four assumptions of the kinetic molecular theory, which are as follows:
The molecules of a gas are loosely packed. Hence, the volume occupied by its molecules is negligible.
The molecules of gases move in a random manner on a straight path and collide with external materials and one another without the loss of energy.
Their molecules do not attract or repel each other.
The average kinetic energy of gas molecules is directly proportional to the absolute temperature in the molecules. Therefore,
