Concept Introduction:

The absorption of water by any molecule depends upon the molecular structure of the molecule.  The molecule which contains polar groups forms hydrogen bonding with the water molecule.  Therefore, the absorption of water by the molecule is high.  The greater extent of hydrogen bonding makes molecule more water absorbent.
