To explain: The reason why major advances in marine biology have come in the last 200 years.
Introduction: Marine biology is the branch of biology that deals with the study of marine organisms, their interactions and behaviors. Marine biology incorporates basic biology and technology to acquire a better understanding of the marine life.
Explanation of Solution
Due to advent of technology in the last 200 years, there was a large procurement of knowledge about the marine life. Technology such as GPS helped to navigate the ways across the seas. Innovation in sampling techniques, preservation of samples, and microscopy helped to get better idea about the morphology and anatomy of marine life. Innovation in transportation modes such as flights and ships helped to travel to inner parts of ocean. Invention of scuba diving devices helped to explore deeper parts of the ocean. More knowledge about geography also helped to get a better understanding of ocean life. Due to the above reasons advances in marine biology is major in the last 200 years.

- Let’s see what you already know! For this activity, you are a palaeobiologist interested in reconstructing ancient ecosystems. You have searched the scientific literature and found 5 clues:1. The majority of the field site (~100 km2) is mostly covered with limestone. However, in one area younger mudstone rocks are preserved above the limestone.2. The limestone has many invertebrate fossils including starfish, sea urchins, and coral, but mostly has bivalve shells. 3. The limestone also has vertebrate fossils. Small shark teeth are sometimes found. A single elasmosaurid plesiosaur tooth was discovered. Amazingly, several coprolites (fossilised dung) have fish vertebrae found in them; one coprolite even has a feather inside!4. The mudstone is rich in tiny ‘microfossils’ that include:• Small mammalian teeth • Pollen from 29 different families of flowering plants: the most common families are Caesalpiniaceae (peacock flowers)5. The mudstone also has larger fossils, including:• Pelvic and…arrow_forwardSCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY Imagine that you are a graduate student working with university scientists on the effects on sea turtles of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. - You have the chance to use the very first time-machine created by humans. You volunteer to travel 520 million years back in time to collect coastal marine animals. The first organism you encounter is unusual looking and does not resemble any extant organism you know. You notice that the body is segmented, and the segments are not identical. You also notice that the organism has well developed eyes and one pair of long antennae. Their jointed appendages are branched but unequal in size and have various shapes. Moreover, the body appears to be rigid and covered dorsally with numerous spines. Try to classify this organism (e.g., its phylum) based on its appearance and describe its symmetry. Then speculate on its ecology, likely life history (reproduction), and key developmental features. The second organism that you encounter is fixed to the substrate, firm, and has fan shape with finger like projections. It is brightly colored. As you observe it, a few branches of the fan break off. You…arrow_forwardThe biggest living in earth?arrow_forwardThinking Analytically Considering the fact that we have already found more than 20,000 deep-sea marine species and we have only explored a few percent of the deep ocean, how many total species do you think there may be in the deep sea?arrow_forward
