Which of the following are characteristics of aging cells (select all that apply)? A. Chronic inflammation results in premature shortening of telomeres B. Lengthening of telomeric DNA sequence C. Accumulation of telomere-dysfunction–induced foci (TIFs) D. Older cells produce more telomerase E. Increased erosion of telomeres
Expert Solution
Step 1

The correct answers are as follows-

A. Chronic inflammation results in premature shortening of telomeres

C. Accumulation of telomere-dysfunction–induced foci (TIFs)

E. Increased erosion of telomeres

Telomeres are the DNA sequence located at the end of the chromosomes. They are repetitive DNA sequences which help protect the genome. During each course of cell division, the telomeres shorten. They help in the end replication of DNA. When the cell undergoes ageing, the telomers undergo shortening. It is one of the characteristic features of ageing. The telomeric sequences are maintained with the help of the telomerase enzyme. This enzyme helps in lengthening the sequence at the chromosome ends and protects the genome. So, chronic inflammation results in premature shortening of telomeres, subsequently resulting in ageing. Accumulation of telomere-dysfunction–induced foci (TIFs) and increased erosion of telomeres can also be associated with the same.
