Declaration of Independence proclaimed the freedom of the colonies from Great Britain, and marked the first time a
group of people had asserted its right to self-determination (ability to advocate for their own choices) and a
government of its choosing. Signed by 56 men, the Declaration's primary author was Thomas Jefferson, John Adams,
Benjamin Franklin, and more. It listed grievances against the King of England, and later inspired more revolutions for
freedom in France and other Latin American countries.
The Preamble (Preamble = introduction)
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed (given) by their Creator
with certain unalienable Rights (cannot be taken away), that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of
Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving (obtaining) their just powers
from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is
the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles
and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
