Introduction

The Philippines was claimed by the Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan for Spain in 1521 during his circumnavigation expedition. However, he was killed on the island of Cebu by a native chief. The archipelago was named after the Spanish King, Philip II. It was named so by the Spanish explorer, Ruy Lopez de Villalobos during his expedition in 1544.
