The Thyroid gland is endodermal in origin. It is present below the larynx over the upper part of the trachea in the neck region. It is the largest endocrine gland which is like a butterfly or H-shaped. The gland contains 3 million rounded follicles arranged in lobules, with each lobule having about 40 follicles that are held together in areolar connective tissue. Each follicle is lined by the glandular epithelium of cuboidal to columnar cells. Follicles are filled with semifluid made of glycoprotein thyroglobulin. The latter is protein complexed with thyronine hormones.
