If the 2 solutions have the same osmolarity, explain how can they lead to different cell responses?

Step 1

Osmolarity is defined as the moles of solute particles present per liter of solution. It is a colligative property which forces the solvent to move from less concentrated to more concentrated solution across the semipermeable membrane.

Tonicity is defined as the property which indicates relative concentrations of a solute which cannot penetrate the cell membrane easily.

The membrane is penetrating to urea while it is non penetrating to sucrose.

Penetrating solute can enter the cell even when it has same osmolarity as that of cell cytoplasm. This movement is done the concentration gradient.
