Description: You will be learning about secret codes and their uses in the past. Then use your knowledge of coding to
decipher a coded message. You will also create your own code and secret message!
Step 1: History and Secret Codes
Throughout history cryptography, the science of making or breaking secret codes, has been
used to communicate throughout history. Examples of this can be seen in Ancient Rome,
during the Civil War, and world wars. The more complex the harder your code might be for
the enemy to understand. During WWII a lot of communication was done through radio
transmissions which could be easily intercepted by the enemy. It was important for both the
Allies and the Axis Powers to have ways to receive commands and other information without
their plans being understood. The German Enigma codes were very difficult to break since
they changed often, though they were eventually decoded by the British. Being able to crack
the code of the enemy meant knowing their plans, positions, and more.
Navajo Code Talkers
When the U.S. was preparing to enter WWII, the Army and Marine Corps enlisted recruits
from Native American tribes to be code operators. Men from the Navajo, Kiowa, Hopi,
Creek, Seminole, and several other tribes signed up. The Navajo in particular made a name
for themselves. Their unwritten language served as a powerful communication method to
develop codes from, which Navajo Code Talkers used to communicate. They created a
code based on their complex language and could translate it to English within 20 seconds
(existing code-breaking machines took up to 30 minutes). The Navajo Code remained
unbroken throughout the entire war.
