Biology B Tutorial 10 (Week 13) - Embryology Tutorial Ten-Embryology The development and birth of babies is such an intrinsic part of our existence. Its something that is happening around us all of the time. However, it can be really easy to forget how many specific events need to occur at exactly the right time, and in exactly the right place, in order for conception to occur, let alone for the formation of the entire fetus. Our adult body with all of its different cells, tissues and structures originated from a single fertilised zygote. Trillions of different cells originating from one fertilised cell. It's phenomenal when you stop and think about it. But its not only the embryo (and later fetus) that goes through this amazing transformation, the mother herself undergoes sweeping changes to nearly every body system to support her pregnancy and that doesn't just stop at birth, but rather continues well into the post-partum period with the onset of lactation. 1. Of the many millions of sperm that are deposited into the female's reproductive tract during copulation, only one can achieve fertilisation. Describe the journey that this successful sperm must make from its delivery into the vagina through to the completion of fertilisation, including the hurdles it must overcome to achieve this feat. 2. Now consider the zygote. The zygote undergoes cleavage as it makes it way down to the uterus, what stages does the embryo go through during this journey and how is implantation achieved once the embryo arrives at the uterus? Consider here the involvement of hormones and what is required to ensure the start of a successful pregnancy. Biology B Tutorial Ten-Embryology 3. Using a flow chart, detail the hormonal control of labour. How do the hormones lead to the physical aspects of labour and eventually the expulsion of the fetus? 4. Describe the control of lactation. What needs to happen to ensure an appropriate milk supply for the infant? 2
