For the most part our reproductive system is relatively quiescent up until puberty after which it plays an important role not only in our ability to reproduce, but also in the development of secondary sex characteristics. This is controlled by the ovaries or the testes. Not only are the gonads important in the production of gametes, they also play a critical role in hormone production that governs many of the functions of the reproductive system. 1. The ovaries are governed by a number of hormones which perform a variety of functions. These include Luteinising hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, estrogen, progesterone and human chorionic gonadotropin amongst others. Think about the function of these hormones and how they relate to each other and the functioning of an estrogen-dominant reproductive system. Consider the Hypothalamic-pituitary gland-gonad axis and then the role of these hormones on the ovarian cycle. 2. The ovarian and menstrual cycles are involved in preparing the ovum for ovulation and concurrently the uterus for implantation. Using a chart to illustrate an average 28 day menstrual cycle indicate the various phases of each and what occurs during each stage. You may also want to include from above the influence of various hormones during the 28 day period. 1
