A biologist is examining two genetic mutations. Genetic mutation A occurs in 15% of the population, mutation B occurs in 4% of the population, and 1% of the population have mutation B and do not have mutation A. a) Is having mutation A independent of having mutation B? Explain/show the reasoning for your answer. b) Is not having mutation A independent of having mutation B?

Question
A biologist is examining two genetic mutations. Genetic mutation A occurs in 15% of the population, mutation B occurs in 4% of the population, and 1% of the population have mutation B and do not have mutation A.
a) Is having mutation A independent of having mutation B? Explain/show the reasoning for your answer.
b) Is not having mutation A independent of having mutation B? Explain/show the reasoning for your work.
Expert Solution
Step 1
Define the events,
A : mutation A occurs
B : mutation B occurs
Given, Genetic mutation A occurs in 15% of the population, mutation B occurs 4% of the population.
So, P(A) = 0.15, P(B) = 0.04
1% of the population have mutation B and do not have mutation A.
So, P(Ac∩B) = 0.01
Now, P(B) = P(A∩B)+P(Ac∩B)
Hence, P(A∩B) = P(B) - P(Ac∩B) = 0.04-0.01 = 0.03
P(Ac) = 1- P(A) = 1-0.15 = 0.85
