"Did you say P20?" How far can that go? Well for this dine-in restaurant, it can give your
tummy just what it needs to be happy. Dennis and Tess Soriano together with their
family made this possible through Bente Silog.
Bente Silog serves meals for 20 which targets students and workers belonging to the
lower income bracket. They serve "silog" meals which is a common Filipino term for a
combination of fried rice and egg. Added breakfast viands like longganisa (sausage),
ham, and tapa (beef) would then make it more interesting and filling.
One of the challenges of Bente Silog was to reassure their customers that their food is
clean. Due to its price, people had the notion that it was not safe. Their food and
commissaries are actually approved by the Food and Drug Administration so
eventually, they were able to convince their customers that their food was safe, just
really affordable.
Their profits are very minimal at P3-P5 for each meal. It is given that they have to
continually seek for ways to minimize costs. To do this, they source their ingredients
locally and many of their recipes are home-made. Other than that, family members
help out in the store to minimize the need to hire more employees. Even up to now,
many people doubt their food's safety and their concept's credibility. Now that they are
open for franchising, some people think that they are a scam or a fly-by-night company
especially so that even their franchise packages are low priced. This, however, did not
stop them from expanding as shown by their 23 franchisees in Luzon.
Even if the future isn't predictable, they still wish to keep their promise of offering meals
for P20 years from now.
