Briefly describe the key status change Maria experienced that moved her along the stratified vertical mobility scale. Use an example to contextualize how she experience vertical mobility. (2pt) 2. Is Eric’s situation a result of his unwillingness to work? In other words, does Eric and the others that live in the parking area lack merit ? Why or why not? Explain using the concept of meritocracy. (2pt) 3. Describe how landlords have an advantage over tenants using conflict theory (hint – think about formal norms and structural inequality ). Use an example from the film to support your answer (3pt). 4. Using one of the Appalachian families as an example, describe how either a non- governmental or governmental program addresses poverty using structural functionalism . (3pt) 5. Is health / dental care a private or public problem ? Why or why not? Explain using an example from the documentary to support your answer. (3pt) 6. Describe the tiny-home construction in Los Angeles using conflict theory (hint – think of class consciousness and Elvis’s decision to act on it). In addition, describe what a home meant to the recipients / homeless using symbolic interaction (hint – what did it mean for them and how did it help their lives). (4pt)
