Running head: CULTURALLY RELEVANT 1 Culturally Relevant, Developmentally Appropriate Early Learning Activity Elondra Macon ECD 336: Examining Multicultural and Anti-Bias Education Karen Wilson September 4, 2023
CULTURALLY RELEVANT 2 Culturally Relevant, Developmentally Appropriate Early Learning Activity, we are always striving to help our students with their learning. We know that   students are more engaged academically and have had improved in social and emotional outcomes   when they see and hear themselves in a classroom environment. So, we as teachers make our lessons into games, to help build positive-incentive systems. While these things will help, sometimes they are not enough. Activity Plan for the Early Learning Environment In this section, complete the chart below to share an activity that could be used in your early learning environment for the child in your chosen case study. Title Our Skin Age 3-4 years Goal Each child will discriminate self-awareness, confidence, family, pride, and positive social identities Steps 1. Prepare blank body templates. 2. Read “Our Skin” story to prepare the children. 3. Give each child a blank body template and have them create their skin. 4. Encourage each child to use discuss their picture. Activity Plan at Home Title All About Me Poster Age 3-4 years Goal The goal is to create a “All About Me” poster to share with the class
CULTURALLY RELEVANT 3 Steps 1. A letter will be sent home with instructions. 2. Families will have a week to create a poster all about them. 3. Families are welcome to come and volunteer in the classroom and present posters during circle time. Creating a Culturally Competent Learning Environment The activities that are outlined help support culturally competent learning environment. As a teacher I should focus on engaging students in culturally relevant learning by   promoting student collaboration and interaction. This is closely related to getting to know your students and allowing them to be represented in the instructional materials. In an environment where students are the focus, student success is inevitable. Incorporating the Foundations of Culturally Relevant and Anti-Bias Instruction These activities above that will incorporate the foundations of culturally relevant and anti-bias instruction. The science of brain development, which includes the critical period of language between birth, and five years of age. (Curenton & Iruka, 2013) The first activity will help remote early literacy in early childhood. It helps to promote the understanding of language development in children. The use of the body templates is an example of intentional teaching. This activity well help children identify their skin colors, as well as their friends and everyone else around them. The third activity showcases, what each family can tell the class about themselves. It allows the families to brainstorm and create, and share information about their culture as well as themselves. Each activity incorporates, a foundation of culturally relevant in anti-bias instruction that helps children and families understand one’s culture.

CULTURALLY RELEVANT 4 Discussion Each one of these activities are designed to help discuss the cultures and diversity of each child. It helps create a culturally relevant and anti-bias lesson that each child can learn from. This helps each family be able to share things about themselves that will help everyone understand their culture and where they come from this will increase the awareness and each child so that they know that everyone is different and even some people come from different places across the world. These activities also will help the teacher better understand everyone's culture and how to implement culturally relevant activities in the Lesson plan in the future. Conclusion Every classroom is different when it comes to inclusion and diversity. It's up to the teachers to increase the diversity and implement culturally relevant instructions into their everyday lessons. They can do this by designing and planning activities for families to complete to better help everyone understand once culture. Creating developmentally appropriate activities based on the three foundations can help children understand diversity more. References
