Cultural Competence Cultural Competence Cultural competency is the ability to provide and organize and effectively deliver services that meets social, and cultural needs of the students in my care. One strategy would be focus on engaging students in culturally relevant learning by promoting student collaboration and interaction. This is closely related to getting to know your students and allowing them to be represented in the instructional materials. In an environment where students are the focus, student success is inevitable. Promoting Family Engagement Promoting Family Engagement One strategy to promote family engagement is to send home newsletters. The newsletter could be in digital form or physical form. It informs families of the different things that are going on in your classroom or childcare center weekly or monthly. This is a great way to share a project that children are to work on with families, or even upcoming events for families to attend. Supporting Families Supporting Families As a early childhood development professional you can support families in accessing high-quality multicultural education for diverse learners by involving families to come in and share their own cultural traditions with the class. Or they could simply come in during one of the months and teach us about a tradition or holiday they celebrate in that one. It’s a fun way for everyone to get to know the cultural background of each student in the class. For example, September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic heritage month. It will give the Hispanic culture opportunity to present some of the things they do during this time. Period to the classroom.
