SOC 211 Social Stratification Special Topics Assignment #1: U.S. Poverty Watch the documentary Poverty in the USA ( video link ) to answer the following questions. The video is 51 minutes long. Submit the complete assignment through the Ch. 8 Social Stratification and U.S. Poverty portal. Video URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f78ZVLVdO0A&t=2s The questions corresponding to the video generally appear in the order below (20 total points). 1. Briefly describe the key status change Maria experienced that moved her along the stratified vertical mobility scale. Use an example to contextualize how she experience vertical mobility. (2pt) Maria has no bed, no furniture, and no house. She didn’t get to keep a single thing and gave it all to her ex-husband. In California where she lives, the cost of rent has gone up and her salary was not enough to afford an apartment. But since the 2008 crisis, the economy has never been stronger with record-breaking growth, but the system is not kind to those with little to no cash. If I am correct, an example of how she experiences vertical mobility could be the organization that supplies them with the outdoor kitchen, portable toilets, and waterpoint. She turned over a brand new leaf as the video says, and every morning, she goes to the gym for her needs and has a job so she isn’t fully homeless. 2. Is Eric’s situation a result of his unwillingness to work? In other words, does Eric and the others that live in the parking area lack merit ? Why or why not? Explain using the concept of meritocracy. (2pt) Eric was a successful computer engineer, and now he lives alone in his car. He makes an agreement with employees at a pizzeria for free food. If the pizzeria has pizza that sits for too long, they save the pieces and give them to Eric. He shares the unknown slices with other people who are suffering. When someone lacks merit, it means that they aren’t showing skills or qualities for awards. In my opinion, I feel like he does show skills in giving food to the other homeless people in the program with people who want to get ahead.
3. Describe how landlords have an advantage over tenants using conflict theory (hint – think about formal norms and structural inequality ). Use an example from the film to support your answer (3pt). Landlords have an advantage over tenants because landlords have power over tenants because they own the property. They can set rent prices, evict people, or even change terms. An example from the video would be if a landlord raises the rent, a tenant might struggle to afford it. This is clearly obvious through the video when they put papers up on the doors. Tenants don’t really have a lot of negotiation. Landlords control the property which can lead to risks and conflicts to tenants. Anything that throws your budget off slightly, you could have a judgment of possession and can get evicted. 4. Using one of the Appalachian families as an example, describe how either a non- governmental or governmental program addresses poverty using structural functionalism . (3pt) In the video, the Appalachian region is where the poorest counties in the country are found. During the summer, a food truck drives around that gives out free meals to children. They serve up to 200 meals a day to those going through poverty. These people are working together to help those who are suffering and help address poverty through their program. Some other ways poverty was addressed was through food stamps free of charge to the poor and distributed to 40 million people, and with this, they benefit through food aid. According to how many kids you have and your income they put so much on the card for food, although it’s a very tight budget, but are able to spend their food stamps in any food market. 5. Is health / dental care a private or public problem ? Why or why not? Explain using an example from the documentary to support your answer. (3pt) I believe health / dental care is a public concern. People have a lot of struggles trying to figure out if they want medicine to save their lives, or spend groceries for the week. Medical fees in the United States are a huge amount of money and the homeless have a hard time with dental assistance. The reason I believe this is a public problem is simply because there are so many people who struggle with even being able to afford to get help with their health and dental care, in the video there are so many people who need help with their health issues. 6. Describe the tiny-home construction in Los Angeles using conflict theory (hint – think of class consciousness and Elvis’s decision to act on it). In addition, describe what a home meant to the recipients / homeless using symbolic interaction (hint – what did it mean for them and how did it help their lives). (4pt)
With the tiny home construction in Los Angeles, the homeless numbers have increased drastically and have become very tragic. The cost of everything keeps going up and there's no regulation and can raise the rent whenever they want. Elvis gave up his job and devoted all of his time to helping the homeless. It's crazy how Elvis has given up on his job to devote his time to helping those who are struggling with homelessness. His major project is coming up with the idea to come up with houses for people to improve their daily lives. It helped their lives incredibly as it helped them feel better, do better, and want better. Although his project doesn’t make everyone happy and people are against it, the police had told Elvis they would destroy the cabin, he moved it to a privately owned land but still helped very hard for the homeless. 7. Using symbolic interaction describe how the program in Waco, Texas raises awareness of poverty. (2pt) The program in Waco, Texas takes part in this awareness where high school students live like they’re homeless in the role-play challenge. The goal is to create compassionate care for poverty, and when you’re trapped, you have to have an advocate to live the life of a homeless person. They used storytelling and personal experiences on how poverty is to highlight the issues. Symbolic interactionism is used in the case in the Waco program, they used materials and shared experiences for those who experience this on a regular basis to walk in their shoes for a deeper understanding of their life. What did you think of the documentary? (1pt) I personally am not the biggest fan of watching documentaries, but I really enjoyed watching this documentary and I believe anyone who watches the full video will truly spark them and make them realize how poverty is a huge issue no matter where you’re homeless.
