Consider the following hypothetical situation:  Four college seniors are out late at night – Sheryl, Wanda, Omar, and Frank. They all turned 21 earlier that year and have been going out to the clubs together on most weekends since turning age 21. One night after leaving the club late (they carpooled), Frank suggests that they stop by the store and grab some beers to drink while they drive around. While Wanda and Sheryl think this is a good idea, Omar is not so sure. He said it is illegal. He is also tired and ready to call it a night. Frank, Wanda, and Sheryl earnestly tell Omar that drinking in the car is perfectly legal so long as everyone is age 21. After about ten minutes of attempting to convince Omar, he verbally agrees that drinking in the car is legal despite knowing it not to be true. Omar also agrees to have a beer with them despite being tired. After buying the beers they are pulled over for having a taillight out. The police officer sees the beers, cites them for open containers, and they all spend the night in jail. Describe sociologically the following situation using at least one term / concept / theory that best fits each of the following (1pt each – 5 total points): 1. an agent of socialization by social group 2. a formal norm by age 3. a social group phenomenon 4. a public social institution that is also a formal agent of socialization 5. an act of deviance violating a formal norm

Person A : After a tough day at work, a woman comes home tired and ready to relax while cooking dinner. However, one of her two kids needs help with his homework. The other child becomes suddenly sick and want her mom to come rest and take care of her. The woman’s husband, also having a long day at work, is looking forward to dinner. He also asks his wife for help sorting out the laundry so he can have clean clothes the next day. He hopes to have a glass of wine and watch T.V. with his wife after dinner. b. Person B : A college senior is in their last semester to earn their bachelor’s degree in journalism. They networked a connection to land an internship for the local T.V. channel after graduating in three weeks. However, they are not doing well in one of their classes and need a high final exam score to pass the course. They want to do well but find it hard to focus as their sights are on this new internship opportunity. They wonder if they will have the skills to complete the internship tasks. These days they find themselves studying up on the personnel of the T.V. station and ignore the anxiousness they have with the final exam. c. Person C : An auto mechanic finishes his shift on Friday. He looks forward to attending the tailgate party with his buddies at the big college game tomorrow. He bought the tickets months ago and has not hung out with his pals for several weeks. Many of his friends have expressed they are looking forward to hanging out with him. A few hours after getting home his boss calls, leaving a message asking him if he can cover a co-worker’s shift tomorrow. The garage he has
worked at for the last four years is very busy on Saturdays and promises to get some car repairs finished were made to customers. He has hoped to be promoted to lead mechanic sometime this year. While he considers that, his mom calls saying she does not feel well. She has a repair person coming to fix her water heater tomorrow and hopes her son can be there to deal with the repair person while she rests. What he really wants to do is go to the game and see his friends. 6. Use the description to answer the questions below (7 total points) Two hypothetical individuals: Person one : male (he / him), Black, age 34, has a graduate degree, and works as a computer programmer.  Person two : female (she / her), White, age 26, has a high-school diploma, and earns tips as a low-wage server at a corporate restaurant. They have been dating for about 6 months after meeting at a local hip-hop show. He attends a Baptist church with his mother each Sunday. She has been attending political rallies with friends and co-workers to support abortion rights. 1. When these two individuals get together, what is this group called? Hint – specific term (.5pt) 2.
