BLOG-SOCIOLOGICAL LENSES 2 Title: Parenting and Technology Through Sociological Lenses III. Sociological Analysis The way parenting is done now is incredibly different from previous generations thanks to the influence of technology and social media. These powerful influences have shaped the way parents raise their children, along with negative and positive dynamics. In this blog post, I will analyze how technology and social media have influenced parenting through the lens of three relevant sociological perspectives: conflict perspective, structural functionalism perspective, and symbolic interactionist perspective. A. Technology and Parenting Through the Conflict Lense Sociology defines the conflict perspective as the view that opposition and conflict define society and are necessary for social evolution (Cohen, 2021). The sociological conflict perspective illuminates the role of power, inequality, including in society. The conflict perspective ow that we are in the digital age, the conflict perspective can bring on new challenges for parents that are bringing up their children and the power struggles and conflicts that are able to develop between parents, children, and outside forces. While applying the sociological conflict perspective alongside with parenting in the digital age, give emphasis to the key issues below: 1.) Digital Divide: There is a constant divide between parents having equal access to technology, which results in diversities in their capacity to sustain educational resources and opportunities for their children. The digital divide magnifies the inequalities in society today.
BLOG-SOCIOLOGICAL LENSES 3 2.) Online Safety: Children are at risk of predators, cyberbullying, and inappropriate subject matter that give the parents concern to manage. 3.) Time Allotment: It is challenging for parents to synchronize their internet time with their children’s demands. B. Structural Functionalism Perspective The structural functionalism perspective tends to gravitate towards the role of institutions and how they participate in the stability of society. While employing in the context of parenting and technology. 1.) Child Education: Technology permits parents to accommodate items needed for educational fundamentals that supplement traditional schooling. Websites, eBooks, and educational apps while enhancing parents to cooperate in their children’s learning process. 2.) Information Sharing: Parenting websites and social media platforms propose a platform for parents to participate in sharing knowledge and experiences. The sharing of information assists parents towards accommodating to the new challenges and understanding the changing parenting morals. 3.) Remote Work: The unification of technology has welcomed flexible work situations, which enable some parents to work remotely from home. This multiplies quality family time and enables work and life balance, bounding with the functionalist perspective’s significance on social stability. C. Symbolic Interactionalist Perspective The symbolic interactionalist perspective entails how an individual can interpret and construct meaning through their interactions.

BLOG-SOCIOLOGICAL LENSES 4 During the digital age we are in, the symbolic interactionalist perspective indicates: 1.) Digital Presence: social media provides parents with arranging an online identity and correlating with other parents and their similar experiences. This can impact how parents distinguish themselves and how others observe their parenting ability. 2.) Digital Communication: social media, video calls, and texting make it possible for parents to maintain communication with their children when they are physically apart. This form of interaction shows symbols of care and love to reinforce the parent and child bond. 3.) Digital Cooperative Gaming: Parents and children participate in online games, watch videos, and do activities together. By sharing this time together, it can give the parent and child quality time sharing common interest towards assisting with their bonding experiences. As you can see, analyzing parenting and technology and social media through the conflict perspective, functionalist perspective, and the symbolic interactionalism perspective supports a comprehensive understanding of the impact technology and social media has on parenting skills. Doing this permits us to future exploration of benefits and inequalities, within family structures. As technology perseveres, so does the influences it has on parenting for parents to provide a positive environment for their children’s development.
