Hi Everyone, Upon watching Alice Goffman’s video that was in our required resources, I have chosen to discuss an example of institutional racism that perseveres immensely today. The lack of educational opportunities for minority families, especially in the public school system, is clear to many of us. The public-school systems that minority children attend is not offered the equal number of resources such as funding and the quality of their education as middle-class families and higher are offered.  Districts in high-poverty areas, which serve larger shares of students of color, get less funding per student than districts in low-poverty areas, which serve white students, highlighting the system’s inequity (Allegretto et al., 2022). The under supported public schools have a trying time to maintain the teachers that are qualified, along with obtaining up-to-date textbooks and technology for the children while sustaining a safe and healthy learning environment for the children. In turn, these children do not develop and acquire the knowledge that the middle- and upper-class families are able to grant to their children that come from a dissimilar background and education. Many of these minority children will not even come close to receiving the education that they deserve just like any other child inherits. The lack of quality of the minority children leads them down a road they should not have to go on due to the barriers they will face for the rest of their lives. Breaking down these barriers and embarking on the education inequalities is crucial so that these children have an equal opportunity towards obtaining a brighter future.
