Week 9 Assignment: Diversity and Ethics Cover Letter DeCarann Speaks SOC 101 Rachel Crane December 17, 2023 1
Dr. Gabal Director, Diversity and Ethics Herringbone University Dear Dr. Gabal: I am writing in response to an opening on your diversity and ethics committee. Please find my responses to the questions on the job ad below. Describe how your background and unique perspectives would be a valuable addition to the team: In terms of my background, I can a lot to the team, which I believe will be an asset to the organization. Due to moving around and always wanting to learn new things. I am positioned to understand various activities and also I work well with different cultures. I have been in different faculties that were different in kind. The sociological concepts in this course are cultural diversity and social interaction. When it comes to cultural diversity,I understand that we all have different cultures and come from different background. Using this knowledge I know how to put myself in other people's shoes and have empathy for others and working well by learning their culture and incorporating it into my work life so that they may feel more comfortable. This concept makes it easier to see things from others' point of view. As far as social interaction, as a child growing up n foster care I was moved around alot so I had to be around different people and get along with them. I think by having this background it made me a well rounded individual. Give an example of a time when you intentionally looked at other diverse and ethical perspectives in order to make a better/more ethical decision: During my time as a travel Medical Assistant I had to work and take care of all different types of individuals. Some had different backgrounds than I did. Social interactions was a concept that I had to use because of the simple fact is that I had to continue to talk to everyone and make sure their needs were being met. In one paragraph, answer questions based on the scenario below: Scenario: In the graduate program at Herringbone University, students are allowed only one missed class per semester or they face academic discipline. Three female students have approached you as the diversity and ethics officer with a concern about the policy. They explain that they all have young children (as do many students in the program), and getting childcare during class times is difficult because some of the classes don’t end until 8:00 in the evening. They feel the policy is unfair, especially since the university doesn’t offer any support, leniency in policy, or childcare options. In addition, the location of the university (an upper middle class neighborhood where most children have at least one parent at home) is not where most students live (a neighborhood where most children have two working parents or a single working parent). 2
How would you approach this issue using diverse and ethical perspectives? Use specific examples from the scenario and your personal and professional life. Why is it important to consider diverse and ethical perspectives in this situation? How would you raise awareness and communicate the importance to others at your school in your role on the diversity and ethics committee? I would approach this issue by bringing awareness to the fact that this may be of discrimination against students who have young children, which is wrong. When it comes to diversity, every student is not same. I am a mother, student and a fiance. So I realize the struggle of things happening that is beyond your control. Teir are certain sacrifices that you have to make when you have many different responiblites. I would ask that the attendance policy allowance of one absence be increased to allow for unforeseen circumstances. There shouldn't be a policy in place that hinders one group of individuals from being able to live their life. Judging someone before you know them is in my eyes wring. Judging them for their diverse background would also be a no for me. So just because some has a different situation then the next student it should not mean they should get treated differently than anyone else. I would put together a committee that would teach individuals how to have empathy or put them selves in other people shoes so they wont treat them the stereotypical way. I just believe that you should get to know someone before you judge them about their backgrounds. Thank you for taking the time to review my résumé. I look forward to talking with you. Sincerely, DeCarann Speaks 3
