1 Introduction The authors expound on their previous publications on hope-focused couples' perspectives. Albeit adopting a similar approach as past publications, the current edition thoroughly articulates the theoretical foundation of the hope-focused couples approach 1 . In particular, the book incorporates ideas from a multiplicity of clinician approaches as well as relational scholarship, especially positive psychology and attachment theory. Summary Hope-focused couples approach is basically founded on strength and hopefulness. The approach helps couples evaluate their strengths for the creation of a positive narrative in their relationships to confront the hopelessness and discouragement often reported by couples during counseling (Ripley and Worthington, 2014. 31). Hope-focused couples approach is typically founded in a structured questionnaire design to facilitate clients in the assessment of individual strengths and collective strengths as spouses. A key component of the approach is forgiveness, which beautifully dovetails with strength and hope as well as biblical principles. The authors draw on extensive scholarship on forgiveness to propose several interventions for fostering forgiveness desire and stages for its realization. In the first section, the authors introduce the theoretical foundation of hope-focused couples approach. In particular, the authors highlight four couples' treatment goals namely virtue which constitutes observing ego, spiritual growth, self-assessment and sanctification, happiness, warmth, and health (Ripley and Worthington 2014, 21). The next section addresses cultural 1 Ripley, Jennifer S, and Everett & L Worthington Jr. Couple therapy: A new hope- focused approach. InterVarsity Press, 2014 p.13

2 competency issues and counselling diversity. The rest of the book follows a treatment course, including pre-counselling intervention as well as questionnaire screening for treatment planning and intake, and in-session intervention. The last section of the book addresses obstacles and resistance to treatment as well as handling partners with traumatic history as well as pornographic addiction. Concrete Reflection My marriage has had its conflicts just as any marriage or relationship has. Before reading the book on hope-focused couples approach, our marriage was rocky concerning certain issues. The case studies of couples who had gone through a similar issue however, defeating them was very encouraging to read about. Most of the couples featured in the book had reached the same point as our marriage (Ripley and Worthington, 2014). Nevertheless, we agreed to wait for the four days of hope-focused counselling sessions stipulated in the book. The experience after reading the book was a life changer. It felt like riding on a roller coaster. Indeed, God used the authors to help our marriage over the rough spots. The book taught us how to care for ourselves and how to embrace an altruistic spirit of minding the emotional welfare of our fellow spouses. The eye-opening counselling session helped open our eyes by influencing our hope to fight for the survival of our marriage. Furthermore, the individual and joint couple counselling sessions helped bring us closer to one another than ever before. Before the miraculous hope-focused couple approach interventions, all efforts outside of our own efforts had failed. My spouse could never consent to a couple's counselling, as our troubled relationship could not seem to find common ground to move forward. Nevertheless, my spouse ultimately consented to accompany me to the counselling session after a year of begging 2 . 2 Ripley, Jennifer S, and Everett & L Worthington Jr. Couple therapy: A new hope-focused
3 In addition, the counselling experience was non-regrettable. The counselling taught us to forgive each other for the healing of our emotional wounds. Furthermore, the "heart talk" had a miraculous impact in restoring our marriage 3 . It helped us to open up to one another emotionally as the key to sustaining our marriage. Indeed, "when we stop talking, is when we begin fighting." Critique The authors base their couple therapy approach on Christian belief and faith in hope and consequently in loving relationships. Approximately 1.8 billion or almost a quarter (24%) of the global population subscribes to Islam, and Islam is a state religion in 26 nations across the world. Another 1.2 billion people globally identify with Hinduism approximating to 16% of the world's population. Buddhism claims an additional 400 adherents globally. Accordingly, the book's Christian worldview is exclusively relevant to 31% of the global population who identify as Christians, excluding the worldview of the rest, 69% of the world population who identify as non-Christians. Hope-focused couples approach is also exclusively grounded in a hybrid of scientific theory, particularly attachment and positive psychology theories, and Christian worldview. Accordingly, the approach is biased towards an empiricism approach to marital relationships disregarding rational or philosophical paradigms on heterosexual relationships. Hope-focused counselling therapy is also grounded on the belief in hope as the key component of the Christian experience (Ripley and Worthington, 2014). Accordingly, the hope- focused couples approach posits a lack of hope as the basis for faith crisis. Couples therapy further demands the couple's individual commitment to the functioning of the relationship, an approach. InterVarsity Press, 2014 p.13 3 Ibid p. 18
4 approach untenable in the severely damaged relationship whereby the couple cannot consent to be in the same space. Couple treatment is additionally insufficient in unfortunate correspondence between the couple or otherwise where there is no greater connection between the couple.Hope- focused couples approach founded on three tenets, namely hope, strategy, and interventions. Hope defined as change, willpower, and willpower to change and wait power for God to work 4 . As articulated, whereas alternative worldviews articulate the willpower and way power aspects of hope, some worldview, including Christianity itself, downplays the "wait power" aspect of hope as evident in Biblical scriptures that indict laziness or "faith without action [as] dead." Application The book expands knowledge on the hope-focused couples counselling approach. In particular, the book provides a theoretical foundation for a hope-focused approach for application by counselling practitioners, relationship scholars, clinicians, and psychologists. Furthermore, the book proposes an ideally effective questionnaire for application in the assessment of a couple's individual and collective strengths. Hope-focused approach further underscores the paramount significance of forgiveness as the critical ingredient for couple counselling supplemented by biblical principles. Furthermore, the book provides a wealth of interventions drawn from the wealth of scholarship on forgiveness to help promote forgiveness desire and teachings to a couple during a counselling session 5 . Besides, the book informs focus on the adaptive goal in a problematic relationship as the key to unearthing attachment shortcomings of a couple. In particular, the authors emphasize positive focus during the couple's counselling session to promote empathy toward their relationship difficulties. 5 book informs emphasizes on the emotional connection of the couple to help substitute defensiveness and criticism. Accordingly, the book informs the shift to solution-focused couples counselling through an emphasis on strengths and hopefulness as depart from the mainstream routine couple counselling therapies. Hope-focused couples counselling approach therefore mimics the latest leadership theories, such as path-goal leadership theory, which emphasizes purposeful rather than charismatic leadership. Overall, the book provides hands-on tools for effective counselling of couples in a difficult relationship. In particular, the book provides the theoretical and applied foundation of hope-focused approach for application by both relationship scholars and couple counsellors practitioners.
