1 Assignment 1: Applying Sociological Concepts SOCI 1001 B William Flynn Kat Huybregts B 04 I am using the concept of W.I Thomas’ definition of a situation and focusing on the scene between 1:20 and 1:31. William Isaac Thomas’ definition of a situation is a symbolic interactionist concept that explores how people act in the situations they are faced with and the
2 multitude of outside factors that influence their behaviour in those situations. Thomas defined a situation as “If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences.”(Flynn, 2023) This concept follows the idea that the way that people perceive and interpret certain events and prior situations will in turn influence and alter how they act and react in future situations. For example if someone is walking down the road and they see a dog, what they do from there completely depends on the definition of the situation. If they have had positive experiences with dogs in the past, such as therapy dogs and other well trained pets, they would perceive the dog as friendly and therefore would find the dog much more approachable. In contrast if the person in question has previously only ever had negative experiences with dogs, such as being attacked as a kid or through dogs being frowned upon in one's society, they would perceive the dog as unfriendly and would therefore find the dog less approachable and dangerous. These previous situations and encounters will then go on to shape the behaviour brought into the situation and overall affect the outcome of the situation. Although objectively whether the dog is friendly or not has already been decided, the situation depends on how you perceive the dog to determine the outcome i.e running away or walking up to pet it. The video “Caught Cheating With Sexy Girl Prank” by Just For Laugh Gags, follows unsuspecting couples on a shopping trip as a prank insinuates that one of them has cheated on the other with a stranger in a changeroom. This summary will focus specifically on the interaction seen between the couple from 1:20 and 1:31. Starting by examining the female, her initial reaction when the girl exits the change room seems to be an overwhelming mix of shock and anger as her mouth is left open conveying awe and her eyes angrily hone in on the girl as she struts away. After the girl mouths “call me” to the male, the female in the couple then directs her full attention to her partner as her overall
3 demeanor shifts away from awe and leans more heavily into anger as she tilts her head in an expression of shock and disgust in her partner. Although there is no portion of the clip showing the female in the relationship directly acknowledging the lipstick stain on her partner's neck, based on her extreme reaction we can assume that she saw the marking. Objectively the symbol of a lipstick stain on one's partner's neck would mean nothing however through the conditioning of society portraying that symbol as a symbol of romance and intimacy. That symbol paired with her own experiences then leads the female partner to subjectively perceive the situation as undeniable proof that her partner has had some sort of romantic experience with the girl exiting the changeroom. The definition of the situation had shaped her behaviour and how she acted in the situation. This resembles a very raw unfiltered form of emotions as the female partner does not even think to question the situation, such as whether or not her partner would be capable of doing something like that or how the girl got into the change room without anyone seeing, but instead after seeing the lipstick stain and the girl she immediately jumps to a conclusion and begins passing her judgment based off of how she perceived the situation. This clip also connects to the concept of the definition of a situation from the male's perspective as he was casually going shopping with his partner and trying on clothes in a changeroom, however when the prank is executed and the girl exits the changeroom, the consequences of the new situation he now finds himself in are very real, and would likely tear this relationship apart if they had not been told it was a prank. Although objectively the male has had nothing to do with this foreign situation of the girl exiting the changeroom, societal norms as well as his own perception of the situation shape his behaviour and lead him to defend his actions that he did not even commit.
